Let's Talk About Love
Love is one of my favorite topics. I love love. All kinds of it.
Recently, someone shared a story with me about how children were asked to define love. My favorite answer was from one little boy who said, "Love is when your name is safe in my mouth."
Many times we use the same mouth to proclaim our love for someone, while at the same time, use our mouth to share their deepest secrets with a stranger or use vile language to their face (knowing where to hurt them the deepest). If your name is safe in my mouth, I hold it gently and only speak from a place of utmost care and utmost honor.
I think we have to start using much more tenderness with one another. Before we say a single word, I think we have to hold their name for a minute and ask how to care for this name.
If we took this approach with one another, people would be much better cared for. There would be grace for mistakes. There would be space for healing because we would have the responsibility of keeping one another safe. And the truth is we are responsible for keeping one another safe.
So my friends, let's try a new approach. Before sharing that gossip, before airing out those frustrations, sit with it for just a few breaths and find out how to care for this person because caring for them is caring for you.
All the love to you. I promise to always strive for your name be safe in my mouth (even if I make mistakes.)
