Promises
So there was a downpour. It was torrential as they say. You know, raining cats and dogs. It was one heck of a storm. It was brief, but it was intense. The road was flooding, lightning was crashing. If you looked too long, you might say it was a little scary. If you were in the middle of the storm, you weren't real sure it was going to end. The wind was blowing. The dogs were hiding. No one wanted to be in the middle of that storm. It felt dangerous. And if you aren't careful, it can be.
But if you know even a little bit about weather, you know that it never lasts. In fact, my step-dad once philosophically said, "One pocket can only hold so much rain." He was speaking out of observation, but my mom and I found it very profound. The rains came down, but it had to end. You can't always be in a rain storm. Eventually, there has to be some sun. There has to be break. Everyone gets to catch their breath again.
And if you look very closely and try to think clearly, you can be reminded that there is a lot of good that comes from a storm. For life to flourish, there has to be rain. And sometimes things need to be washed away to make room for new life. And even when the storm is raging, you can hold tight to those promises you know are coming. You might have to take a couple of breaths, creating your own stillness to find out what they are but they always come when you're paying attention.
And the best part after a storm is the sky. And if you're really paying attention, there's a rainbow to be found. And that rainbow is the reminder that those promises are on their way. You've made it through the storm, and I remember those made promises right smack dab in the middle of it. So hold tight. Life doesn't always come directly after a storm. There's time in between, but the promise is still there.
