What Story Are You Stepping Into?
Yes. The question I wish I had thought about little bit before each relationship I began. And you know, the beauty of this question is that you can apply it to about every area of your life: careers, friendships, etc.
You see, everyone already has a story they're creating. You're constantly developing and writing your story. You have your past story, your current story, and the story that you dream about. So when two people come together and start creating a story together, the story your partner has already been telling is going to greatly shape yours. And truthfully, if your story is a Comedy and theirs is a Horror, something's going to give. There aren't too many seriously horrific stories that are hilarious at the same time (even if there are comedic moments). You get what I'm saying? And let's be honest, the frightful story is probably going to take over. Some stories are more powerful than others.
Picture this: You're walking along in your happy little world, dreaming of the happy little life you will continue to have, with your happy little friends and happy little family. When all of the sudden, you take a turn and everything goes dark. You still maintain your happy little feelings thinking you might just have walked into the middle of a brief little storm. You continue on your happy little walk when someone jumps out and grabs your purse. You think how unfortunate that is and continue on your happy little journey when someone comes by and pushes you down. Maybe this is just a coincidence. You aren't going to let that ruin your happy little day. You walk a little further and get the sense that you just might be being followed. You brush the thought out of your mind and continue on your mostly happy, slightly frightening little walk. The next thing you know you've fallen into a hole. You look around and see that there's a person holding a shovel at the top. You climb out of the hole and continue on your slightly happy, mostly frightening little walk. The feeling is back. You turn around and see that someone is following you. And when you think back, this person looks a lot like the purse thief, pusher, stalker, and shovel holder. But still yet, you continue on your frightening little walk. The pursuer speeds up a little bit and grabs your hand. You grab back and let them lead you into quick sand. It's feeling an awful lot like you might not get out of this one, but you do. So you continue on your slightly terrifying walk, then something occurs to you: you chose to turn down this street, which means you can choose to get off of it. You let go of the stalkers hand, take another turn, and start to see a little sunshine. You gather the pieces and get back to your happy little walk.
So consider this when you make a decision: What kind of story am I stepping into? Don't give up your story. It doesn't benefit either one of you. You can't make someone want a Comedy, and as much as you try, you'll never be truly happy in a Horror. So own your own story and find someone who has a similar story and adds just the spin to make your Comedy better.
You really only get to tell one story. What do you want yours to be?
