On Beauty

On Beauty

I spent the week in Naples with littles, Nanny, and my mom. On my solo morning walk on the beach, a conversation began about beauty (inside my head, of course.)

Beauty has very much been placed out of balance. We get so very off balance in either extreme. Beauty becomes the most important part of our lives or we turn completely against it. You see, the world has been provided with beautiful elements everywhere we turn. Of course, understanding that beauty is not the thing is important. But loving and appreciating beauty is vital. Do you ever feel a bit overwhelmed with life's woes, decide to take a drive, see an unexpected vista, and immediately find a sense of peace? It's refreshing. So beauty is wonderful, I would argue even necessary. Humanity's beauty is necessary. My goal is to be in the center: find and enjoy the beauty of myself (both the interior and exterior) as well as outside myself--the beauty in all of you and in this great big, exceptional world. Pope John Paul II says in Letters to Artists, "Beauty is the manifestation of the Divine." So here's to opening one another to the Divine.
